Who doesn’t like to chill and have fun by having some extra tequila shots? There’s no other feeling better than When the tequila shots send chills to the spine. The extra Añejo is a type of tequila. It’s a type of luxury tequila aged three or more three years. In this article, let’s learn more about extra Añejo tequila and some exciting recipes.

Añejo tequila

The word Añejo is a Spanish word that means “old.” The Añejo tequila is aged for one to three years. It is usually aged in oak barrels. The Mexican government also has a set of rules for Añejo to be recognized as Añejo. Such as the tequila should only be aged in oak barrels, and the barrels should have a maximum capacity of not more than 600 litter.

The barrels used for this tequila are usually whiskey barrels, French oak casks, or cognac barrels. The Añejo tequila is considered a vintage tequila due to its dark color (Amber) and rich, complex, and smooth flavor.

Extra Añejo tequila

The Extra Añejo tequila got its recognition in 2006 by the Mexican government. The only difference between the Añejo tequila and extra Añejo tequila is the aging time for extra Añejo tequila is aged for a longer period. Everything else for the tequilas is the same, be it the distillation or the aging process. When Añejo tequila is aged for more than three years, it’s considered extra Añejo tequila. To be recognized as extra Añejo tequila, it should be only aged in oak barrels, and the barrels should have a maximum capacity of not more than 600 liters. The Extra Añejo tequila has a mahogany color. Due to the long aging process, it’s more expensive, complex, and smooth. The extra Añejo tequila is strong, so it should be diluted before consumption.

Extra Añejo tequila Recipes

Añejo Manhattan

Ingredients:

  • Ice
  • 59 ml extra Añejo tequila
  • 14.5 ml  sweet vermouth
  • 7.5 ml Licor 43 (A citrus-and-vanilla-flavored Spanish liqueur)
  • Drops of Angostura bitters
  • Drops of orange bitters/ orange peels
  • One fresh or maraschino cherry

Add Ice to your pint glass and do it until two-thirds of the glass is filled with Ice. Add Añejo tequila, sweet vermouth, Licor 43 Angostura bitters, and orange bitters in the mentioned proportion. Now Shake it for 30 seconds and pour the contents into your martini glass by straining them. Finally, garnish it with a fresh or maraschino cherry.

Thai Basil Grapefruit Cocktail

Ingredients:

  • 4-5 Thai basil leaves
  • ½  squeezed lime(fresh)
  • 44 ml  extra Añejo tequila
  • 1/2 ounce Green Chartreuse
  • San Pellegrino Pompelmo (grapefruit)

Add lime juice and crushed Thai basil leaves to a cocktail shaker. Then add Ice, extra Añejo tequila, and green chartreuse, and shake the shaker. Fill your glass with Ice and strain the contents of the shaker into your glass. Garnish the drink with grapefruit, lemon, and basil leaves. Enjoy your drink.

Añejo Mash

Ingredients:

  • 44 ml Extra Añejo tequila
  • 14 ml Grand Marnier
  • 22 ml agave syrup
  • 6-8 fresh mint leaves
  • Four lemon wedges

Add all the abovementioned ingredients in the given proportions and shake it well in a shaker. Add Ice to your glass and pour the drink after straining it. Garnish with lemon and mint sprigs.

Añejo spicy Margarita

  • 37 ml Extra Añejo tequila
  • 7.5 ml Grand Marnier
  • 14 ml Lime juice
  • 7.5 ml Simple syrup
  • Chipotle chili powder
  • Lime wedge

Add extra Añejo tequila, Grand Marnier, lime juice, syrup, and chili powder to the shaker in the above proportions. Fill your shaker with Ice. Now shake the shaker vigorously. Strain the contents of the shaker into an ice-filled glass and garnish with a lemon wedge. You can also make a Salt or sugar rim on the glass.

Añejo sidecar

Ingredients

  • 60 ml extra Anejo Tequila
  • 29.5 ml freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 29.5 ml  triple sec
  • 14.5 ml agave syrup
  • ice
  • white sugar and lemon peel twists

Add all the ingredients, including extra Añejo tequila, lemon juice, triple sec, agave nectar, and Ice, to the shaker and shake it vigorously for 30 seconds. Transfer the contents of the shaker into an ice-filled glass.

Anejo Tequila Cobbler

Ingredients

  • 74 ml Anejo Tequila
  • 29.5 ml of fresh orange juice
  • 22 ml  fresh lemon juice
  • 14.5 ml  simple syrup

Add all the abovementioned ingredients in the given proportions and shake it well in a shaker. Add Ice to your glass and pour the drink after straining it. Garnish with lemon and mint sprigs.
